‘Knock Yourself Out XD’ - Porter Robinson REVIEW: Porter’s “Most Heartbreaking Work Yet” Sounds Anything But
Artist: Porter Robinson EP: Knock Yourself Out XD Genre: Dance/Electronic, Synth Pop, Indie Pop Release Date: April 24th, 2024
If you saw Porter Robinson in the airport, would you ask for a picture?
If you did, and told him about how about how you’ve rewatched the live edit of Sad Machine more times than you can count because that second drop is one of the best moments in all of music, then you’re (I’m) part of the problem.
Cosplaying as an irreverent, hyper-successful celebrity figure, ‘Knock Yourself Out XD’ has the braggadocio of a rap song: “got a hundred million on my wrist,” “I drive a new bugatti, not a mercedez benz.” Success and riches come with so many problems... This character, living in a world where he “wouldn’t know how to brush [his] teeth without asking [his] team” is a brilliant mirror of today’s influencer-as-musician culture. Tongue in cheek as it is, he’s still saying, “how did I end up here, in this world of massive material wealth?”
Porter has some of the most intense fans in the music world - a side effect of making some of the best music in the music world. Ask a Porter Robinson fan their favorite Porter song, and they’ll likely tell you that their favorite song saved their life. His impact is undeniable, and expectations for him are is as high as can be. I can’t imagine this narrative is as satirical as intended.
It's brimming with earworms and effortlessly enjoyable. This fresh style, leaning more towards hyperpop and chiptune influences compared to his earlier work, might deter certain fans. It's commendable, as always, how Robinson reinvents his style with each new album release - we’ll see how the album turns out to be “his saddest yet.”
‘Knock Yourself Out XD’ Lyrics:
I threw my phone into the sea
Simple human being
Wouldn't know how to brush my teeth
Without asking my team
Living in the afterglow of everything you feel
But, baby, I'm a short-lived joke
As soulless as I seem
And I'm everything you talk about
Why should you keep letting yourself be let down?
If I'm everything you talk about
I'm in the mirror, baby, let it all out
Knock yourself out
Knock yourself out
Don't know my schedule on the fifth
Bitch, I'm Taylor Swift
Got a hundred million on my wrist
Physically sick
Crying at the airport
"I'm sorry, can I get a pic?"
Telling me a sad story
Another reason not to quit
And I'm everything you talk about
Why should you keep letting yourself be let down?
If I'm еverything you talk about
I'm in the mirror, baby, let it all out
Knock yoursеlf out
(Four, three, two, one)
I wear a big smile, got a drink in my hand
I got a face tattoo, I'm not a regular man
You gotta hold on, I'll tell you 'bout it again
I got a brand new feeling in the back of my head
I wear a big smile, got a drink in my hand
I drive a new Bugatti, not a Mercedes Benz
You gotta hold on, I'll tell you 'bout it again
I got a brand new feeling in the back of my head
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

The news came on May 4th, after a handful of venues set to host the band announced the cancellation. Chicago music venue Empty Bottle reported the cancellations as a result of “personal reasons within the touring party.” At the time of writing, no further word has come out as to the reasons behind the tour’s cancellation, leaving fans to speculate about the artist behind the persona’s wellbeing.

From transparent surgical EQs to characterful analog emulations, these tools represent the pinnacle of audio processing technology, catering to the diverse needs of modern producers and engineers.
Kendrick Lamar fires back at Drake's diss tracks with "Euphoria," addressing their feud head-on. Lamar brings up Drake’s use of AI Tupac, calls him dishonest, and mentions J. Cole, Pusha T. He goes in hard, and there’s a rumored 19-minute unreleased version of the track. Kendrick really hates this guy. The response has garnered praise from Jay Rock and Punch, while Metro Boomin indirectly acknowledges it.
Mannequin Pussy is starting a church of their own. As The Crocodile filled out with trendy teens and seasoned hardcore vets alike, an excited murmur overtook the room. With hands clasped in mock prayer, lead singer Marisa Dabice led the crowd in what felt like a hardcore sermon: a counter-cultural corrective to all the bullshit that led the group’s fans to connect with their music in the first place. It was divine.
Grand cathedrals and dampened rooms, underground tunnels and drum booths - you can put your music anywhere you want, but some plugins offer better sounding places than others. So, how do you choose the best?
Blossoms latest single “What Can I Say After I’m Sorry” is a cracking new track with a funkier spin on their signature sound In collaboration with Jungle’s very own J Loyd, The Corals James Skelly, Blossoms return for the first time since 2023 with a bang. Still complete with plenty of synths and lead singer Tom Ogden’s classic Brit-pop vocals, the groovy bass line and scaling melody add a new dimension to the band’s discography.
All Born Screaming showcases Clark’s pitch-perfect rock and roll sensibilities, bringing her expert guitar playing back to the forefront after 2021’s 70s-inspired diversion, Daddy’s Home. Whereas the sonics mark a return to form, All Born Screaming’s platitudes about death and revolution fall too short to leave any lasting impression, beyond a handful of catchy hooks and some half-baked, moody concepts.
Victor V. Gurbo & Co. offers up a slice of Americana nostalgia with their latest single, "All the Pretty Girls Are Asleep Tonight." Hailing from Brooklyn, the band's roots run deep into the heart of folk tradition, and this track is no exception.
You may have heard of Michael Bland through his work with Vulfpeck on “Hero Town.” He plays some of the deepest pocket you’ve ever heard and one of the tastiest, most understated drum solos of all time. His style is one of a kind, and he’s unmistakable in the first beats of “(Br)other”
There’s something about candid, straightforward honesty in lyrics that can cut deeper than overly abstract metaphors and symoblism and “what did they mean by that?” ‘Mr. Liar’ is a track that isn’t trying to dress anything up. The listener knows exactly what the singer is going through - it hits.
The most interesting part about this track, though, is the artist behind it. Check out Tende Kasha’s biography:
Through this project, there’s still a sense of the person behind the thing. It offers a unique perspective on both the genre and the medium, albeit with an unsettling edge. Luma Fade's work demands attention, promising further evolution and innovation.
